Let Theresa Schiavo rest in peace

Theresa Schiavo died today, but not before she'd been turned into a political game.

Damn it, President Bush... Let Theresa Schiavo rest in peace.

(transcript from Washington Post)

Today, millions of Americans are saddened by the death of Terri Schiavo.

Laura and I extend our condolences to Terri Schiavo's families.

I appreciate the example of grace and dignity they have displayed at a difficult time. I urge all those who honor Terri Schiavo to continue to work to build a culture of life where all Americans are welcomed and valued and protected, especially those who live at the mercy of others.

The essence of civilization is that the strong have a duty to protect the weak.

In cases where there are serious doubts and questions, the presumption should be in the favor of life.

With all due respect (which really isn't much), Mr. President, did you ever apologize to Wanda Hudson for signing a Texas bill allowing hospitals to discontinue life support in "hopeless" cases? Can you truly call yourself pro-life when you allow hospitals to condemn people to death (even against the family's wishes) if the patient's insurance does not cover the medical costs?

While you're at it, why don't you apologize to the soldiers you misled to Iraq? The very soldiers your Defense Department has failed to equip properly. For a compassionately conservative man, Mr. Bush, you are neither compassionate nor conservative.

Everything you said in the statement above is ironic. I honestly find a 6-month old baby to be more helpless than a 41-year old woman whose husband claims would not have wanted to be on life support. The baby, on the other hand, lacked the ability to communicate his intentions. The mother fought to save her baby's life, and it's more significant than the Schindlers' fight for Terri because the child involved was a baby, not an adult. Your bill, Mr. President, deprived the weak (the baby) protection under the so-called "essence of civilization." Not to mention that your utter disregard for what may have been Terri's true wishes does not show respect for human life. Not everyone wants to waste away (to the point where most of the brain has dissipated) without any consciousness that defines human life. We all know you're a moronic theocrat who is no better than Saddaam Hussein, except that you will be out of your last political office in 1390 days. You can't run on a campaign for being straightforward and decisive... but sign a contradicting bill to one that you signed as Governor of Texas.

The hypocrisy is simply outrageous.

Rest in peace, Theresa Schiavo... I am sincerely sorry that your last days had to be spent being surrounded by heated, public debate about your situation. But I guess it's all over now and you're in a better place. Rest in peace, and God Bless...

... because in the end, He is the only one who is merciful.
