CALIFORNIA GAY-MARRIAGE BAN RULED UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
From CNN:
The idea really is simpler than most claim it is. Man wants to marry his lifetime male lover. Or a woman wants to marry her female companion. Why? Because this society is favorable to married couples, and their cohabitance would be simplified by legalized union. And because it's the logical step to take for a couple in love.
I tried to come up with a list of reasons against gay marriage. I came across an anti-gay-marriage website. Their plea? "Help save marriage!"
It's a funny thing really. You'd think that marriage, the consummate symbol of lasting love, would be more aided by tolerance, not hate. You'd think that a group calling themselves the "American Family Association" will not claim that "America declares war against God". Yep. That's what they called Massachussetts' sanction of gay marriage... a declaration of war against God. Yes, the Pope's against gay marriage, and I respect his right to his own opinion. However, the word "God" has thousands of different meanings to different people. To generalize this cause as a violation of the spirituality of everybody is utter degradation of logic and shameful display of a narrow mind.
But no more of that. Tradition isn't always right, if the ban on interracial marriages is any example. The case will most likely end up in a higher court on appeal. But for today, I am proud to be a California. I am proud that there are men and women in our courts who can isolate logical reasoning from biased personal faith and beliefs. As of today, albeit temporarily, California is absolutely golden with a radiance that no steroid-pumping Governator can tarnish.
From CNN:
In the eagerly awaited opinion likely to be appealed to the state's highest court, San Francisco County Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer said that withholding marriage licenses from gays and lesbians is unconstitutional.
"It appears that no rational purpose exists for limiting marriage in this state to opposite-sex partners," Kramer wrote.
The judge wrote that the state's historical definition of marriage, by itself, cannot justify the denial of equal protection for gays and lesbians.
"The state's protracted denial of equal protection cannot be justified simply because such constitutional violation has become traditional," Kramer wrote.
